Hey There,
Slammed this one together. Forgive my sloppiness and inconsistency as
of late. Figured that it's better sloppy than never... I'm in the
middle of a move, even though I haven't found a place to live yet!
I'll be house-sitting until September, at which point I'll need to
find a new home. FYI: I make a great pet. If you'd like to rub my
belly and receive unconditional affection... adopt me! Drop me a
line: twanslist at mac.com
Alternate info always at: http://www.twanslist.com
Twan
P.S. To the asshole who always blatantly steals the content of my
postings to this list and immediately posts it to the web: your days
are numbered, fool. You're a trite thief with whom I would take great
pleasure in smacking around, up close and personal should you ever
have the misfortune of being revealed in my presence... Dare to dream...
P.S.S. To anyone offended by the above P.S.: Perhaps you shouldn't be
on this list... I'm ordinarily a even-tempered guy. But some people
are shit. And you know it. If the right people were able to see this
in Hitler in the 1930's and cut him off at the knees before he gained
power, world history would look quite different. Speaking of which:
Hitler lives and is planning to go to Burning Man. See for yourself:

** 7/30/08: COME TOGETHER FOR LOU! BEACH BURN AT DOCKWEILER **
For Lou Genise.....
Let's ALL have a bonfire gathering at Dockweiler Beach on 7.30.08
@7:30pm!! Who's in?!
Hi everyone. I wanted to forward a beautiful message from Phran,
(our dear friend, Lou's mom). Most of you know who Lou is and even
if you don't, please help us in sending loving and healing energy to
one of me and Dalmacio's dearest friends on Wednesday 7/30/08 at 7:30pm.
Lou is like a brother to us (as is he is to alot of people). About 2
years ago, a bunch of us came together to coordinate and throw a
fundraiser for him due to his cancer. Unfortunately the cancer has
returned. But instead of fighting the cancer, let's LOVE the cancer
out of him (as his beautiful mom, Phran had put it). :o)
Thank you for joining us in advanced! We appreciate it!
Peace & light,
Tangee & Dalmacio
A beautiful and powerful message from Lou's Mom. What an amazing
lady!! Please read on...
Light Lou with Love
July 1, 2008
This is a letter about my son, Lou Genise. He is 37 years old and
until two years ago was the picture of health. Then his world
changed forever. He collapsed on the floor and was taken to the
nearest hospital. After an emergency operation, they found he had 4th
stage colon cancer. No warning, no symptoms. They saved his life but
gave him six months to live.
Another hospital, The City of Hope, reached for a cure. They went
all out for him and so did all of his friends.
The City of Hope came to the rescue with chemo, radiation, pot and
probes, and an operation on his liver. His friends gave of
themselves with their time, money, love, support, food, comfort, air
conditioners – whatever Lou needed.
In the meantime, Lou lived his life. Lou had cancer…. cancer did not
have Lou. Lou felt blessed. He still does.
Now the cancer has returned with a vengeance and it's in his lungs as
well. He has already started back on chemo.
I don't believe in fighting. I believe in Love. And I believe that
together we can love this cancer right out of his body. There is now
measured scientific proof that when enough people join in
consciousness, AT THE SAME TIME, for a common goal, that goal is
achieved.
Here's the plan: On July 30th at 7:30 pm, wherever you are, join
your consciousness to mine with thoughts of love for Lou. To make it
even more effective, light a candle and send your love and prayers on
that flame for as long as it burns and together we will love that
cancer right out of existence!
I'll make it easy. Remember this…… 7/30 @ 7:30, Light Lou with
Love. WE CAN DO THIS! WE CAN!! Tell your friends. Tell your
enemies (give them a chance to love).
Not sure of what to do? On July 30 at 7:30 pm, where ever you are,
stop what you are doing and think of the bestest moment in your life,
when you felt happy, healthy, whole, loved, strong, clear-headed, on-
top-of-the-world. Feel that feeling, light a candle (if you have
one) and send that feeling to Lou. Even if you don't know what he
looks like, imagine a handsome, virile, young man, completely and
totally healthy with a big grin on his face. Hold that thought for a
few minutes. Or if you're used to saying prayers or chanting, do
that. That's it. You've done it.
Are we asking for a miracle? Yes! There is no order of difficulty in
miracles. United, we can and will make a difference.
You too will be blessed because you already are. Spread the word.
And thanx for your help and your loving support.
An added message from Phran:
'You'll notice when you read the letter that I'm asking everyone to
light a candle. It represents Lou's connection to fire and the fire
that burns in his heart as love. Fire and Love mean the same thing
to him, as I'm sure you know. Maybe the Fire Friends will do a
bonfire or something with fire on the 30th. I'll leave that decision
to you and them.'
Love & Blessings,
Phran, Lou's mom.
Phran's email: smilindragon34 at yahoo.com

** PLAYA BOUND? CRITICAL TITS NEEDS YOU! **
2008 is the 13th year of Critical Tits. Every year has brought
change, often new vision, sometimes totally new directions. This
year will be the last Critical Tits Afterparty that we will
organize. The ride itself we will continue to lead and support for
future years. Thus this year is special to us, and we'd like to
invite you to join us in the finale, a celebration of celebrations.
Once again the Critical Tits Ride and Afterparty will be held on the
gorgeous open playa and will focus on women's freedom, power, and
beauty. The CT Afterparty will have live music to stoke that
incredible estrogen vibe. Participation from theme camps and
individuals has been the fuel for our fire, it literally supports and
facilitates the celebration. You rock our world, and in return you
will be rocked by, and be rocking alongside, thousands of the playa's
finest.
We need your help. We are reaching out to camps to bring
refreshments or services to share. We are reaching out to
individuals willing to lend their hands in our setup/cleanup and bike
parking activities.
Please pass this information along to your region’s membership. If
they are interested in participating, please let us know at

** DANCERS SOUGHT FOR PERFORMANCES AT BURNING MAN 2008 **
I am part of a professional dance company in LA, slated to perform a
few times this year at Burning Man.
We are telling an original story (love story/ghost story/time travel
story) through original music and dance, mostly Waltz and Viennese
Waltz. We are looking for 2 more lads, and 2 more lasses, to fill out
our cast, just for Burning Man.
They need to have a ticket already, and to be available for
rehearsals this Summer from 2-5pm in Burbank.
Rehearsals pay $50 each, per person, per day.
Previous dance experience would be a huge plus, being a quick learner
is a must.
Our cast is already composed of artists/dancers/actors/Burners, so
any new arrivals will feel right at home with our down to earth, fun
vibe.

** HAWAII BURNING MAN REGIONAL EVENT REBIRTH AFTERBURN REPORT **
Rebirth 2008 Afterburn Report
Introduction
Overall Rebirth 2008 was a success, there was more participation per
capita, the quality of the art was better, there were almost no noise
complaints, the police and Fire Department were very happy with us,
there were only a few minor injuries, no fights, and we did slightly
better than break even. We had more volunteers and the team leaders
really took up the reins this year.
On the down side we had about half of the paying participants we
wanted to see, although we made the number we needed to break even.
We also had some organizational problems with communication and
management which led to problems on the ground. The Gate was
particularly affected which made their already difficult and
thankless job that much harder (which is a big part of the reason the
Gate staff were so surly). There were also a few people who snuck in
and didn't contribute to the community.
Number of Participants
There were 320 tickets sold, around 80 “gift tickets”, 50-100 kids
under 14, and an unknown number of people who snuck in (est. less
than 40). The population fluctuated day to day with most people
arriving on Thursday and Friday with the expected Saturday evening
surge, and exodus. Informal head counts came back with 320-350 around
the phoenix at the burn on Saturday.
We were hoping that were would have had more like 600 ticket sales
and not many at all trying to sneak in. There were a number of
factors why the turnout was not what we expected including: A) the
bad economy/high airfares, B) our poor promotional job in general but
particularly outside of the Big Island, and C) groups that stayed
away because Rebirth 2008 was back at the Shire. There was a problem
with perimeter security this year, a large part of it was due to
people claiming they were “Shire volunteers” or “Shire residents” who
were not given any “gift tickets” and the lists we had were a mess.
There were also stories of people hiding in cars/trucks, people
walking in late at night, and fake wristbands.
Financials
All told we have wound up with around $500 in the bank. If you take
out money in the bank we started with and money from fundraisers, the
event itself did not bring in enough in ticket sales to pay for
expenses related to the event. We had increased the budget’s break-
even point to make it a bigger budget (that we thought we needed, and
was reasonable) and we more or less came in near the original total
expenditures. It was the money in the bank, and the fundraisers
(particularly the one on Oahu) that saved Rebirth’s bacon. You don’t
have to look farther than that for compelling reasons why we are a
statewide organization.
We also were fortunate enough to have a couple of important
donations. Were donated about 100 sheets of plywood painted by school
kids and other artists that were going to be thrown away. This
donation not only saved us a lot of money, it also was reused in a
number of different projects (like the beautiful kiosks) that really
made the event more visually appealing and inspirational.
DPW
Once again Eli and his dirty dozen did a fantastic job getting the
site ready for the event. The best new addition were the little
kiosks they made out of the donated painted plywood. These kiosks
dotted the site and added a new level of visual artistry.
The DPW volunteers deserve special credit for working so hard in the
weeks before the event cutting back all of that tall grass. Eli
busted up his tractor with the flail mower on the stuff and a number
of others attacked it with weed whackers and whatever else they had.
There were a lot of long, hot, dirty days toiling on the grass at the
Shire and it really shaped our little city.
Eli and crew also spent more than a week after the event cleaning up
and Leaving No Trace. The site was a bit of a mess but after the
cleanup the reports are that the site looks pretty good.
The Phoenix
Mike Maung, our Effigy Engineer outdid himself again. The phoenix
stood about as tall but was painted more vibrantly and lit up with EL
wire better. The phoenix burned better than in previous years, much
more dramatic with small fountains and flares, but it still took a
while for certain elements to fall down. It was by far our best
effigy burn ever and we have Mike Maung, his wife Becky, and the
other volunteers who helped them, to thank for it.
Art
We didn’t have a lot of applications for the art grants this year and
we gave out almost our full $1,500 in grant money. One artist (art
grant winner) did not show at the event and didn’t get a check or
ticket.
There was quite a range of art this year, it was perhaps the most
participation per capita in all 3 years Rebirth has been happening.
It was a calmer year, not so loud or so crazy so late. There were
more events and performances during the day and a greater range of
performance at night.
There were some very creative new themecamps and the parts of the
“city” are really starting to distinguish themselves. The Kids Camp
area was a favorite, the large scale sound art area worked out well,
as did the secluded adult area.
The signs were even better this year. It was really nice to finally
see the Burning Man 10 principles in the form of signs onsite. Hope
really outdid herself with the signs and her installations (and
Luckey too, I know you helped her).
Gate
Once again the Gate was understaffed and over worked, and the Will
Call box was all messed up. Our perimeter was not secure and there
were way too many people sneaking in. There have been many reports of
angry and surly Gate staff, in light of everything that happened to
them I don’t see this as surprising. Sure, the Gate staff should be
courteous and friendly, not yell at you the first thing, but they are
only human and were under a LOT of stress.
Next year our ticket system will not only be improved but it will be
implemented the right way. With a Will Call box that is put together
correctly there is NO need for any list, and there will be NO LIST at
the Gate for R’09. We will also have a Perimeter Director to
coordinate with Koa Puna (and take some stress off of Gate Staff). We
also need to have more dedicated Gate Staff so a few of us are not
stuck at the Gate for the duration (thus guaranteeing angry Gate
staff). The ticketing plan will be tweaked (an online list from day
one, for starters) and simplified. Wristbands may be out, we may not
need them next year, and if we do we are going to go with something
different.
We had a good plan but the implementation fell apart. Henri’s
computer crashed before he could get the ticket info online and that
screwed up the Will Call box. Since the Will Call box was all screwed
up (I wasn’t there to fix it) Freddi and Jackie produced a number of
different versions of our volunteer/ staff/etc. list. This made
things more confusing and the short staffed Gate crew couldn’t do
their job properly.
Koa Puna
Once again Koa Puna kept things calm at the Gate. There were some
problems with the small space we had at the Gate, sometimes with all
the Koa Puna people, the Gate staff, and people coming in and out it
was quite a traffic jam. For next year we may have to rethink people
coming in at night and have a closed gate (only out). We also need a
dedicated person (Perimeter Director) to act as liaison with Koa Puna
and get that responsibility off of the Gate staff and Rangers. Thank
you Koa Puna for another great year.
Rangers
Rangers Parttime, Rose, and Ben (I don’t know his Ranger name)
patrolled the site and dealt with the freaks and crazies. There were
no significant injuries or fights to report, mainly crazy individuals
that we had to remove from the site. Rangers continue to have the
most together camp.
Emergency Services
Once again Freddi, Dr. Adam, Mango John and the rest worked their
magic. We had no major injuries and the Fire Department was glowing
about our preparation and execution.
There was an issue with being understaffed, especially at night
hours. Freddi said she wants more medical volunteers for next year.
In terms of Fire Safety Freddi says we need a better pump for next
year, but it sounds like everything else worked out pretty good. It
was a long hard oddessy trying to get a burn ban exemption but with
the help of the community we made it happen. Thank you very much
Mayor Harry Kim and thank you Chief Olivera, we look forward to
working with you for our event next year.
Greeters
The Greeters have been steadily improving over the years and this
year they were their most organized. Jackie scared up a mess of
volunteers, hounded them for volunteer ticket, and filled each shift
they had. Not everyone worked out or showed up but there were a
number of great volunteers who really did an awesome job.
Information Center
Once again the Info Center was the bastard stepchild of the event. It
has the potential to be one of the most important places on the site
but it needs more attention next year. Henri did a great job holding
down the fort at the IC.
Next year at the Info Center we need at least a couple to a handful
of volunteers, a garage tent with sides (or other enclosed space),
and we need more tables and chairs (or hold onto the ones we already
have).
Staff Kitchen
This was a life saver for those hardworking volunteers who put in
12-16 hour days with no time to cook. None of this would have
happened without Jennie Banta, she slaved away over a hot stove to
feed those hungry mouths. This was not available to general
participants or regular event volunteers, but volunteers who really
worked the event 24/7. The food budget went over by double but there
was actually little wasted and a lot of hungry and hard working staff
got to actually eat (and not just work). Besides going over budget,
the staff kitchen was an unqualified success.
LNT
Eli, John, and a number of others slaved away at the Shire for quite
a while after Rebirth 2008. The final word is not in from Glen but
the reports form the field from DPW say the site looks good.
Andi’s Role
At the beginning of the planning process I (Andi, the Executive
Director of Ka Pilina and Event Producer for Rebirth) told everyone
that my firstborn would arrive a few months before the event and that
I would not be there as much as I had in past years. We all got
together and split up tasks. The team leaders did a much better job
pulling the whole thing together than they ever did, but I was not
able to do all that I had previously taken care of in the past. As
such certain organizational functions were not done or were done
poorly or late or wrong.
At the event I had to leave on Thursday night to fly back to Oahu to
take care of a family medical emergency (everything is fine now,
thanks). I was not able to return to the event and I had to turn over
my functions to a couple of others. In my absence some mistakes were
made, and a few minor problems flared up into huge conflagrations
that took a while to put out (some are still burning). I take full
responsibility for being absent and the problems it caused, it won’t
happen again.
I started Ka Pilina doing everything and have been steadily
delegating functions to others over the past 6 years. There are still
critical functions that I need others to take up (this should come as
no surprise as I have been a broken record about this stuff for the
past few years) including communications, the website, promotions,
etc. Success at Rebirth 2009 will depend on more dedicated
individuals stepping up to the plate to help spread the load.

** BIO-DIESEL EXTENDED BED CARGO VAN AVAILABLE FOR PLAYA TREK **
Burner Cargo Van-dido for rent!
After 10 years on the playa, we're taking one off! So, you can take
advantage of the biodiesel "Vandido" for your playa trek. The most
excellent Project Alma cargo van has been to the playa 3 times, and
it's rarin' to go again.
It is a 1994 GMC bio/diesel extended bed cargo van. It has a big one
ton payload in a separate cargo area, a powerful 6.5l diesel engine,
automatic transmission, and space for 2 passengers. The Vandido has
an updated strong AC, CD player, new tires and a solar charger for
playa longevity. It gets 12-14 mpg depending on load.
We can advise on where to get bio-diesel on the trip to BRC and even
on the playa!
The cost is $275/week and we're looking to rent it for about 3 weeks.
