Last year was so mind-blowingly fun, it's difficult to put into words the experiential peaks I had achieved. Phenomenal art, unbelievable music (the kind of which many people on the planet have no idea exists, even as a possibility), and gorgeous people living the life they have rather than the life that they wish they had. Spirituality, debauchery, philosophy, dancing, fraternizing, laughs, and belly-shirts! If I were you, I'd get myself out there. If you're not interested, I'm glad I'm not you! Rather than go into detail about all of the great things that await you at LiB 2011, I recommend just going to the Lightning in a Bottle website to get all the information you need. All the latest info is live now including the festival map, a virtual tour, how/where to buy tickets, car pooling info, photos and videos of past events, current events and more. Charming vulgarity, indeed! JUNE 10: "BURNING OPERA: HOW TO SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE" IN LA ** (a message from the How to Survive the Apocalypse's composer, Mark Nichols): Hi my LA friends, June 10th is the opening of a show I've been working on for over five years. This creation is commonly known as the Burning Opera or HOW TO SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE by Mark Nichols & Erik Davis. I would really love you all to see it on opening weekend! Here are some pictures from the last run in San Francisco - http://www.michaelrauner.com/opera/content/ rauner_burningopera_1_2_large.html Here is a little promotional video we did early in our rehearsal process - http://www.thereallybig.com/StrangeWeather/ BurningOperaOnAllThingsConsidered.mp3 Here is something from the SF show - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W56D9CMUbgk I am SO excited about what we're doing with the show in LA. This version is a concert version featuring the most charming shadow theater you will see in this lifetime. It will make you feel like a kid again, I promise. So, here's the deal: I can pretty much guarantee this show is going to be your personal theatrical highlight of the year. Not only is it a solid work with an interesting and poetic mostly TRUE STORY and catchy rock music and pseudo-classical wonderfulness...the event that contains it is in itself a wildly creative ongoing art party in Downtown LA. As you'll notice if you read our press, we're employing the age-old theater tradition of following every performance of the show with a popular DJ and speakeasy to take us deep into the night. Syrup Loft may be one of the few places in town where you'll be encouraged to hang out late. Any of you who've been lucky enough to attend Burning Man or the Oregon Country Fair will once again feel that old freedom from last call. You arrive between 7:30-8:30 and have a drink or socialize, wander the magical space, pull cool/dumb stuff to wear from our wardrobe and unwind. Act I starts at 8:30 with a 45-minute intermission at 9:20. During intermission we've got vendors, a beautiful 9000 sq ft roof (fire maybe?), performers and fun stuff to do. The show finishes around 11:00 and then we'll be grooiving and socializing until the wee hours. I don't know if you're like me, but I am SO tired of bad, loud DJ's and I can tell you that ours are NOT THAT. They're the best, and really know how to make a room dynamic and fun. Plenty of places to talk and hang out. This is a night designed for your pleasure. I urge you to get tickets soon. Opening night is already feeling pretty full and I'd just love to have that first weekend packed with friends. This is my gift to you all. Truly, this is for you, and if you don't go away from it saying, "wow...just wow" I'll eat that shirt you gave me. Anyway, tickets HERE. They're $35 which probably seems like a lot, but I'll tell you that for the 25 people working for three months straight with no pay, it's just enough. However if you enter the PROMOTION CODE: "ghostlightgypsies" you'll get a $4 discount. Also, you may notice something called "Illuminated Passage" for $15 for the night. That's free booze at our private after-party. Please email me with any questions. If you are financially strapped but would really like to see the show PLEASE email me. There are a few things I could work out, like maybe a two for one or you could be a comp'd volunteer. We need volunteers! (email syruploft at gmail.com) Love to you all and hope to see you there will bells on or at least SOMETHING on. Yours, Mark 213 537 0548 Address for Syrup Loft: 949 Maple (downtown LA) 3rd Floor.
